We got this 5-axis mill specifically for machining titanium turbine blades. The precision and surface finish are fantastic coming right off the machine itself. What impressed us even more than that was how much the production time was decreased. What normally took three separate setups and almost a week of machining now takes one 18-hour machining operation.
As a job shop that specializes in medical implants, accuracy is everything. This 5-axis CNC center has completely changed the way we operate. We can now machine complex organic geometries out of PEEK and cobalt-chrome, in one clamp, eliminating all of our fixturing headaches and human error.
We went from a design-and-test cycle that took 2-weeks, to just 4 days. The simultaneous 5-axis capability has allowed us to machine unbelievably light, strong parts that have internal channels and compound angles that we could never dream of milling before. It is incredibly solid and hasn't had a problem cutting anything we threw at it, from aluminum blocks to carbon composites.
It is extremely adaptable. One day we are machining a complex camera housing from magnesium, the next day we are machining a intricate sculpture from tooling board. The intuitive control system made the learning curve way shorter than I first expected. It is now the machine we use the most, and it allows us to provide our clients with capabilities far beyond what almost all other local prototype shops can.
